It's cause? Selfishness...
Unlike you I don't have any kids. But what I do have is many clients. Clients, just like kids, who need my full support, encouragement, guidance and dedication. Clients who need selflessness and someone who cares more about their goals than them! While this is a mindset coaches like myself need to have, it can turn out to be a very selfish one of we're not careful.
“To be truly selfless, I believe, we must become somewhat consciously selfish first. We must look after ourselves both mentally and physically, and sacrifice time and energy to do so..“
Selfish in a similar sense to the selfish nature of sacrificing your whole life and dedicating it to your kids! Now before you explode and say 'how is sacrificing your life for your kids selfish?' let me explain what I mean.
You see my type of clients, just like your kids, benefit most when their guider is guiding from a place of good health, energy and enthusiasm. This isn't to say that your children, or my clients, won't benefit from our efforts if we are ran down to the ground due to sacrificing our whole lives and time to them, and abandoning ourselves as a result. But the benefits will be limited!
To be truly selfless, I believe, we must become somewhat consciously selfish first. We must look after ourselves both mentally and physically, and sacrifice time and energy to do so. When you begin to do that not only do you benefit tremendously but your children, or in my case my clients, benefit tremendously too. As the old saying goes 'You can't pour from an empty cup'. It couldn't be more accurate!
At the turn of last year I promised myself I'd begin to spend less time on my work, and more time on myself, in order for me to be able to do better work and help more people. While there can be ramifications in the initial stages of becoming somewhat selfish in order to become more selfless, it is well worth it. By filling up your own cup, quenching the thirst of those closest to us who need it most becomes a lot easier & sustainable long-term, preventing us from burning out.
What about you? Are you running yourself down to the ground, like I was doing last year, or are you beginning to create a little routine JUST FOR YOU? A routine that no doubt others will benefit from due to you becoming a little bit more of a happier & better person?
