Why does postpartum weight loss feel harder than before pregnancy?

Many people notice that strategies which worked before pregnancy no longer produce the same results afterwards. This is not due to a lack of willpower, but to a combination of physiological and environmental changes. Sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, increased stress, and reduced recovery capacity all influence appetite, metabolism, and fat storage.

Cortisol levels often remain elevated in the postpartum period, which can increase cravings and promote abdominal fat retention. Time constraints and mental load may also reduce the ability to plan meals or train consistently. Weight loss after pregnancy is less about pushing harder and more about adapting to a new baseline.

Approaches that support nervous system regulation, adequate recovery, and realistic routines tend to align better with the postpartum body than high-intensity or restrictive methods.
