What role do hormones play in weight loss after pregnancy?

Hormonal shifts play a central role in postpartum weight regulation. Estrogen and progesterone drop rapidly after birth, which can affect mood, energy, and metabolism. Cortisol often rises due to physical recovery, disrupted sleep, and ongoing stress. Elevated cortisol signals the body to conserve energy and can increase fat storage, particularly around the abdomen.

If breastfeeding, prolactin adds another layer by prioritising energy availability for milk production. These hormonal conditions are adaptive, not dysfunctional, but they can slow fat loss temporarily. Supporting hormonal balance involves managing stress, eating regularly, prioritising protein, and avoiding excessive training loads.

Weight loss becomes more achievable as hormonal patterns stabilise over time, especially when recovery is respected rather than rushed.
